The company I worked for wanted me to sign blank patent applications — i.e. they had the name and a vague description, but we hadn’t worked out the actual claims. I happened to be going to a neighbor’s Christmas party where there were some intellectual property lawyers. I asked about this, and they looked at me as if I asked them if Nigerian princes really would send me millions in oil revenue. They then listed all the ways I could get into hot water for this. So, I said I’d wait until I could read the final version. Net: they took me off the list of inventors on the patents. (This was OK: they were nuisance patents anyway, although I probably would have gotten a couple of thousand for each.)
