Vern should never have made any commitments or plans unless he was absolutely sure! NEVER let it get that far - only to back out! Now, how do you repair all those damaged relationships and the embarrassment to all the family & friends that showed up. And paid all that money to the caterer, the cake baker, all the reception amenities, the florist, the church/chapel, the musicians, etc. - literally thousands by the time you get done. What a waste! KNOW your spouse - and how they react to all situations BEFORE YOU PROPOSE / ACCEPT THE PROPOSAL.
