    It sounds like he has a terminal illness and that the treatment will have very bad side effects. Like chemotherapy for example.

    I assume that that’s a hospital bed. It’s interesting that the mattress, in an upright position, has no visible means of support. I’ve had lots of experience and never worked with a bed like that.
