Unfortunately, the second option is how the majority does it; prolonging death. (Sorry about being cynical.)

It sounds like he has a terminal illness and that the treatment will have very bad side effects. Like chemotherapy for example.

I’d go for #2 to give medical science more time to come up with better options.

That’s how ‘sugar free’, ‘lite’, ‘diet’ and ‘non-fat’ make me feel.

I assume that that’s a hospital bed. It’s interesting that the mattress, in an upright position, has no visible means of support. I’ve had lots of experience and never worked with a bed like that.
