No. 4 in Our Top-10 Most-Read of 2017: Calvin and Hobbes

While it's fun to go back in time and see the first comic of any of the blockbuster strips we've highlighted in Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7. It does feel like they'll be the most-read every year.
But for now, let's stick to it. Today, we're going back to autumn 1985. Let me set the scene: The Kansas City Royals had just won the World Series, the No. 1 movie at the box office was "Once Bitten" (a vampire movie that starred Jim Carrey and Lauren Hutton ... it also featured a small part for Megan Mullaly as "Suzette") and I was a painfully shy senior in high school who happened to know word for word the entire Broadway soundtrack to "West Side Story." #judgefreezone
Anyway, Calvin and Hobbes was an immediate hit at my high school. The school paid for a Chicago Tribune and a Sun Times for the students to read during their free period and people would get in line to read Calvin and The Far Side. Truly an enlightened age!
I am sure it doesn't surprise you to know that Calvin is still the No. 1 overall feature on GoComics and its staying power doesn't seem to be ebbing at all. Anecdotally, I feel like kids are still discovering the books and loving it as much as we all did in the student center at Loyola Academy in the mid-1980s when the corduroys were a little too snug and everyone's hair feathered a little too beautifully.
