Bri — loved your line about never setting foot on a bus again. How’s that workin’ out? LOL
I didn’t learn to drive till quite late, so I spent many years taking the bus.
For several years I lived in two cities and had a store in a third… only 50 miles between the farthest but all in different counties.I was a walking bus schedule…. knew all the various city, county, Bay Area and Greyhound routes… and took the latter from San Francisco to BC several times and once to Illinois and back.
And that reminds me…. a little late for this…but Stel, you suggested a Swiss Army knife for Dennis….
And Joyce thought it was a great idea…. then she realised that if a thing like that could distract him from his tool belt, maybe she could too.
So she came in and got my special Swiss Army Manicure…. to distract Dennis…. and also draw attention away from those… scrawn…. um… slender legs we kept pointing out.
I wonder if he is using a regular mirror or convex to get a bigger picture.Sad day yesterday. Been to training as a officer for such a situation. Followed exactly what we were instructed. You hope to get there to stop it but usually get there after. I see it this way. If we arm pilots to protect their aircraft teachers should be armed to guard the children. Not go out and confront the gun man. That is my job. But lock your room get everyone into a closet or corner away from the door. Get your weapon and stand between them and that door. Let no one in unless you know them. If they start to break in then they are probably a bad guy. Cops usually yell alot using our jargon. Gun control is not the issue. In Oregon he used a stolen one in Conneticut he used two legally owned ones. You have to have a gun to defend against a gun. Either that or run away but remember you may have to pass the gun man to get out. Better to hole up and make yourself a hard target.Peace be to you and yours.Remember the lost.
I think the Monkey just might view that picture as fueling his distrust of felines. After centuries of cats pretending they don’t even like bananas….I bet the Sheriff will tell me he now believes the lying creatures are responsible for the recent theft of dozens from the shed behind the Tiki.
Meant to post that my Londoner ex-boyfriend of a half dozen or so years ago was… or still IS, I presume, a huge fan of the Goon Show, and Spike Milligan in particular.
If I ever recover the hard drive from my computer that crashed a couple of years ago, I’ll have at least dozens of mp3’s of them to share.
But…. sigh…. dunno if I’ll ever get all those years of stuff back… never backed up all that music cos he was always going to give me CD’s anyway.
And speaking of English novelty songs…this is one of my favorite bits of music…I have to copy it to every new computer and even put it on my phone…never fails to make me laugh.
Bev…. had to think for a moment about which post would get me excommunicated. Then I remembered….LOL!
Yeah I’m thinking that baby must have parents who do a LOT of crazy stuff, to be so nonchalant about yet one more goofball trick.
I’m hoping the teenagers in duct tape aren’t parents of anybody just yet…and somehow they don’t look suited to each other for the long term…hard to tell in a picture, of course…it is a sticky situation.
Veteran… you’re a very smart and funny man, an obviously very caring person, and I agree with you on an awful lot of things…but to me, arming teachers is just too dangerous.
Whatever our positions on gun control in general…teachers, while mostly wise, collected, and in my book, even heroic, are not all the bastions of sanity and self-control I’d like to believe.
They’re human. Some have been convicted of the same crimes as anybody else…. and they’re in close quarters…. and in closer proximity to children than most people, presumably without the sort of screening and training a police officer is given before being issued a weapon.
If every teacher has a gun, every school day is a chance for a weapon to run amok, not just the few schools on the few days when one manages to be surreptitiously brought in.
I decided to let my curiosity get the best of me after reading some of the comments on B.S. and A.C.. I went to yesterdays comics, and clicked on the,“Load The Rest Of The Comments”.My anti-virus did nothing at both comics. And since I’m not a total dummy, i had my anti-virus do a complete system scan on my laptop.Nothing.I’m not a techie so i dint know if it means anything, but i have had a few pop ups and pop unders get through my blockers. I wonder if that has anything to do with recent problems people have bin having. Can a pop up/under look like malware to a virus detection program?
Bev …. I sometimes have a nail or two shaped like tone of those… totally accidentally…..but I have to admit that when I see that picture, I actually kinda shudder. LOL.
Fun to do, maybe… but I hate acrylic tips anyway, and just imagine sitting there wile somebody files all those tools into shape.
I imagine the “corkscrew” is painted and dried around a cylinder of some sort before being trimmed… a lot of patience on the part of both model and manicurist!
(Oh… right…. of course I did them in my salon…. why do you ask?)
bev never heard of “smile”. I guess we will know more when they release his autopsy report. I watch the news on this every so often, but honestly, it totally breaks my heart. I can’t even imagine the pain and anguish. To say it is heartbreaking, doesn’t even begin to cover it. I keep crying so I stop watching. One man in the town for 30 years, I saw it on Yahoo news, he, took his bulldog down to Dunkin’ Donuts with a sign that said his bulldog gives free hugs. At least 100 people have stopped by so far. He said he didn’t know what else to do, but he had to do something and at least in that one brief moment when they hugged and petted his dog, he could see it helped them all, even if just for a moment.
@Happy, Bev, Linda et al, about malware and the forums….sorry if this gets long…. but
I believe it was unlikely that there was actual malware on any of the forums!
What happens is, you search for an image…. see one on “site.com”…Click to go there.
Your AV software and your browser quickly scan the site…if either sees a known threat, you are warned.
If you’d been searching the web for information, not images, you’d have seen a notation before you even clicked, but image search seems more direct.
Meanwhile you copy the picture link and post it.
Someone in the meantime posts malware to THAT site…. ie to “site.com” not GoComics.
But when you want to go back to where you or anyone else left a link on GoComics to site.com, your virtual defenders, your AV software, Google and/or your browser scan again and find a link to what is now a compromised site….which may or may not have anything do with the picture you linked to.
Just on the off chance it does, you’re warned or evenprohibited from accessing it.
When the problems at site.com are fixed, as they often are by their own administrators or software, the forum will no longer link to a bad place.
If it is indeed a problem with that actual picture, anyone with decent (and UPDATED!) AV software would get a warning and a possible virus capture immediately upon clicking it.
There is always still a bit of a risk, as malware like viruses and trojans are created faster than the companies fighting them can roll out new “definitions” to identify, capture or destroy them…..and images in particular can hide malware in the code, where no one can see it at first glance…so your software tries to err on the side of caution.
And yes…one problem is the “hammer” approach….malware includes spyware, pop-up generators and all kinds of annoyances and not “just” dangerous viruses.
ALWAYS ALWAYS update your anti-virus and anti-malware software, or use one that updates itself, so it will recognise the latest threats.Cost is no excuse — I use a free one that (knock wood) so far has worked fine.Without any, you threaten your computer…. and MINE too!
As to malware, I trust my Norton 360 and it does update and back me up whenever PC idles. @Susan, link was cute and I agree – “can’t be too hasty, never get nowhere”. Tavern songs are fun..I would also never do anything like that with my nails. I used to paint special things (best I did was American flags on every nail – difficult to paint using left hand). All my polish is off today and nails are ready to paint tomorrow with S Hanson “Shell We Dance”. Light enough to last for my 5 week trip even if it chips or wears off (not packing polish). I washed hair today and have some of my good Kerastase shampoo there for later parts of the trip.
Play with me! I also always liked this song (did not know it had been done by Bing when I was just 4, tho). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHmfEJWYJt8Someone will have to tell me what code to make that shortcut into a word/phrase!
I also saw little Sir Echo by Vera Lynn on You tube(I see that she was just 73 when she did the medley of WWII war time tunes that she did at Queen’s B-day in 1990) here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0Dwf93z7w8 That’s only 2 years younger than I am now. She does her hair in a similar way too, but I still look more like Debby Reynolds.
@ Essex, I’ve never been on a motorcycle. He has rented them on trips with his kids since his divorce, but the only trip I took of that nature was a Vegas one with his youngest daughter before she was married. I’d never ride one by myself (not a risk taker). We have been on balloon and small plane rides (very common around here).
Hi guys, just checking in briefly. Hopefully, I’ll be around at the turn but right now I’m really dragging. I’m functioning on a little over 3 hrs sleep thanks to my being on line till after 3am this morning then getting up to walk dog at 6am – forgetting I had a two hour drive to be at work by 10am ! Just got back.I’m headed over to the Tiki for a well earned single malt and something to eat. Perhaps I’ll take advantage of the hammock out back for a little nap… yeah, that sounds like a winner !Later…
Thanks, Dry! I hope you have a great Holiday as well. I just checked on DS and once more back here. .I edited many of my recipes yesterday and can list them in case anyone would like something a little different (will do tomorrow). 2 things I plan to do for daughter’s Christmas party: my Cuban black beans and fresh cranberry orange dressing; may even make twice fried green plantains (in walnut oil if she has it-I do).
p.s. DAZZ I think I have seen her here, but being new myself, I can’t swear to it. Some of those here go to Andy Capp and know her from there. You should drop by over there, I don’t always comment myself, but I like to read their comments, unless there is a bazillion and I don’t have time, LOL but I have been an Andy Capp fan since I was a child. I have a few of the paperbacks from WAY back when! And when Sunday comics in the newspapers were the main reason people bought the Sunday papers, AC was in our paper and my parents read it to me before I could read!
I’m in the mood for a little tenor sax, so I’ll just play a some Joe Lovano on the old jukebox.Another Redbreast for me and set Red up with a double Glenfiddich when he gets in, unless he like to try some of this wonderful Irish.
Bri…. well, I didn’t know EVERY route, or every detail of the ones I didn’t take…but still, I knew where most of those went, and where to catch them to get home…that sort of thing…In Santa Rosa, where I live, well into the 80’s or maybe later, we still had only about 5 bus routes, and they were big loops…For instance, I was near the end of a loop, so it took me only a few minutes to get downtown, but on the way back, I had a 30 minute ride all over the west side of town before my stop.
I often walked the two miles home instead. And there was one bus per route, which means it left downtown once an hour…We have two on some routes now… and at least they no longer stop running for an extra hour or 90 minutes mid-day when the drivers have lunch.
“my father play his Tenor”.My dad played our piano, but mostly trombone, and was a band leader back when he and mom were married in 35. .MY BLACK BEANSIngredients •olive oil•1 onion •3 green bell pepper•2 bay leaves•1 pound dry black beans (which have been soaked overnight, rinsed and drained)•Water•Cilantro•Cumin•Thyme•minced dry garlic•Salt•Pepper (and a little cayenne optional)Method Add olive oil to pot and turn on high setting. Chop yellow onion and stir into olive oil. Cover and let cook while you chop bell pepper into 1/2 inch chunks. Stir in bell pepper black beans in a colander. Add to pot along with water, and seasonings. Cover and cook on medium at least 6 hours, stirring occasionally and adding water as needed.
Easy Orange Cranberry SauceThere are three sugar options in this recipe. You can make it with 2 cups of sugar, you can use less sugar (1 1/2 cups), or you can use 1-cup regular sugar and 1 cup Splenda® (sugar substitute). There is now pre-made Truvia baking blend in a pour containerIngredients: •2 cups sugar (or 1 cup of Truvia baking blend) •2 cups orange juice •2 packages (12 ounces each) fresh cranberries •Zest from 2 oranges I made on 10/18/09:•1cup sugar and 1/2 cup Brown Sugar Twin (0 cal)•juice & pulp from 2 oranges + a little water rinse (squeezer)•2 packages (12 ounces each) fresh cranberries •Zest from 2 oranges Preparation:1. Add all the ingredients to a large, saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let cook until cranberries pop open, stirring often (about 10 minutes). 2. Fill gift jars or serving dishes with the orange cranberry mixture, cover well, then keep chilled in refrigerator until serving or giving it to your friends and family. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++A few weeks ago I treated myself to French Toast for breakfast and my good maple syrup was hard as a rock, so I pulled out some blueberries that I had previously washed and frozen and poured some in a pan, added just a little purified water and some of that Truvia baking blend. Cooked it down to a nice consistency and used just that (after butter) on my French Toast – no measuring and just a little stirring. Loved it! I will be doing that for some of our breakfasts (and at daughter’s house too).
I also have revised my recipes for Butterscotch Candy and Amaretti cookies but I use Vencedora vanilla in both. Let me know if anyone would like those recipes. I plan to make both while I’m there.I may also make Clam Chowder while there. I like soups in cold weather (I use canned baby clams because minced clams often have bits of grit and I like to use the liquid) and I like the potato, celery and onion all diced small, and always use a decent white wine (pinot, zin or Rhine).
Hello….! I feel a bit greedy having made the last three posts. OK, maybe I should let someone els get a word in. I’m a chatty, harmless drunk (I wish I was drunk).
The Goons are the best! Their humour will never get stale to me -they still play them early morning comedy show – over and over again on the radio (remember radio?)
Goodness, does this party here never stop? It has taken me 20 minutes to read through all the comments – now I must back to work!
Plans for yesterday and today: finish cleaning the house and decorating.
How I actually spent yesterday and today: sick in bed.
Just thought I’d try to catch up on the comics, but after reading through ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY-SEVEN COMMENTS on Ballard St……well, “ain’t nobody got time for that!!”
Bev — Sometimes settings get changed. You accidentally click a shortcut, the browser gets updated, or the gnomes that live in computers have a drunken party….anything can happen.
I just opened Chrome and checked it out for you….there may be a shortcut for this but I don’t know it.
This may sound like a lot of steps but it’s very simple and only takes a moment if you read and do it one at a time.
Hopefully you already know that the little box with three horizontal lines in it, right after the address bar (just under the red X that closes the window), is a menu….Click it.
Somewhere near the bottom of that list is “Settings.”Click that.
Under the three things on that list it says “Show advanced settings…”Click THAT.
Scroll down THAT list….you’ll see a box that says “Languages and Spell Checker settings.”
It may look like there’s only one thing there to change, but actually the box is a link button… so… Click the box….
There will be a list of languages you use (should say American English)…and under that is a checkbox that says “Enable Spell checking.”
If that little box is empty , click in it to put a checkmark in it.
It has to have a visible checkmark in it for spell check to work.
If there’s already one there and spell checker still isn’t working, let me know….here or elsewhere.
I’ve been busy emptying programs onto DVDs from my TiVo hard drive so that shows I want to save in sequence WILL have plenty of room for 5 weeks (I will turn OFF “suggestions” and eliminate or revise some “season passes” to keep no more than 2 episodes. For those who don’t use TiVo, this all Greek, just as cell phones and such are to me..@Linguist, using everclear sounds a bit raw to me. I used good Absolute to make Limoncello (when a neighbor gave me a big bag of lemons last year in appreciation for permission on oranges). I’d like to know where you found pretty bottles, as next time I would like to gift some to SCA friends..Yes, those early bras were usually quite pointy (guys liked them tho’). I still have a silk nightgown that gives that kind of shape (wore for breakfast in July but I’ll save such a scanty one for summer- don’t need any for bed, but with family floating around I have my silk PJs for breakfasts at any house.
@pcolli, Butterscotch is easy (especially if you have a thermometer that goes to hard crack (290-300).Butterscotch CandyMakes about 410 gr ingredients•1 C. sugar•1/4 C. light corn syrup•2 T. Vencedora vanilla•1 1/2 t. apple cider vinegar•1/4 t salt•1/2 stick butter; cut into 8 pieces• Line several baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
•Use more butter to grease the sides of a heavy 1-quart saucepan. In the saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, salt, water and vinegar. Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, to boiling, stirring constantly with a large spoon to dissolve the sugar. Avoid splashing the mixture on the sides of the pan. Carefully clip a candy thermometer to the side of the saucepan.
•Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, while adding the butter, 2 pieces at a time. Continue cooking the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the thermometer registers 290-300° F., (hard-crack stage). The candy mixture should boil at a moderate, steady rate over the entire surface. Reaching hard-crack stage should take 25 to 30 minutes.Remove the saucepan from the heat; remove the thermometer. Stir in the vanilla. Cool for 5 minutes. Pour the mixture, 1/2 tablespoons at a time, onto the prepared baking sheets. The mixture will form 1-inch circles.•Let the candy harden. Wrap the candies individually in clear plastic wrap to store at room temperature.
Linda, yes it travels well – provided you have leak proof containers and don’t put it in your carry-on luggage ( security can get a bit snarky ) .You might enjoy shopping with DIL for the cool bottles and ingredients there and the both of you bonding over the batch making. Of course YOU have to sample, (for quality control purposes,) of course !I really hope you have a fantastic Christmas up there in the Windy City.Let me know how the moonshine making went !
@Linguist, I will just be making Amaretti and Butterscothch at his house to share with family and assisting daughter at her house for Christmas dinner with more visitors from Scotland.. She agreed that she’d love my black beans and the fried plantain (and for those of you with nut allergies those can be fried in any oil suitable for frying). Just cut UNRIPE plantains into about 1" slices and fry both sides, drain briefly and smash with your palm to 1/2 depth then fry again and drain, dusting with kosher salt. Good side dish.
@pcolli, MY recipe is for natural butterscotch CANDY (not using artificaial “morsels” or flavoring (not cookies and just the natural reaction of sugar with vinager). No baking, just simmer to hard crack on a candy thermometer -very easy! When my kids (and Cub Scouts) were young (back in the 60s) we did the same with spice oils (no vinegar) just added a few drops of oil flavor after shutting the heat. I also added colors to distinguish between flavors and have used those for stained glass windows on gingerbread house. You don’t want to know what it is like with half dozen or so 9-year old boys running around while making sugar candy!
Yes Essex, but is the current store candy made with natural surgar and vinager? I can doubt it now that I find Hershey using all kinds of c**p in their "chocolate. There are many things I choose to buy rather than make (first that comes to mind is Horseradish sauce ;-) I grated my own only once!
I’m still working on emptying my TiVo’s hard drive and changing recording attributes for my (over 60 “season passes”). I think I will wind up with 8 DVDs from current contents (#6 is recording now and the last will be a TOTAL potporri – you would not BELIEVE the variety of stuff I like). I record most @ medium because 4 hrs fits on a disk and quality is fine for me on my 32" screen here.
I see my spelling is bad, but my desk chair is over by TV so I can see text while revising all those settings so I am currently standing and with just one chandelier on -not very close. Criminal Minds just came on live as it is taping on my settings.
@Linguist, the only time I tried butterscotch liquor was mixing with a cacao liquor from Brasil called Piranha ( pardon spelling -I’m headed up to bed (was just writing lists for tomorrow). I was not Cuban except by infusion (married to one for 16 years – until 1975). We met at a pro-Castro political event where I was practicing my Spanish and he spoke no English so we were married at Holy Name Cathedral in a Spanish ceremony. I had already decided he was a mistake after 9 years but had to wait until kids were old enough so I could work. I no longer attend churches because they judged me so harshly. .I found walnut oil tastier than other for plantain but pcolli said something about nut allergies.
@DAZZI knew there was a Cuban influence in your past life. I’m glad your “new” life is much happier.I have a dear elderly ( I wouldn’t dare call her that ! ) lady who I claim as my adopted Cuban mother. She and her family led an exciting and very intriguing life in Cuba ( pre and during Castro ), and here in Florida. She is the one who taught me the joy of Cuban cuisine.Although, I am fluent in Spanish, I confess, I sometimes, have difficulty in understanding her "machine gun Cubano ".I’ll bet you make great coffee !

I’m wondering whether your problem with access is cos you use Chrome.
Chrome is a Google product, and Google, even in Firefox, gives a lot of warnings about sites that “may” be compromised.
Firefox shows the warning but it doesn’t control the browser…. maybe Google’s own browser stops you from entering.SusanSunshine Premium Member almost 12 years ago
Last time this happened someone had posted a picture from a site that Google warned about….but those warnings come and go.
So the posted picture may have NOTHING to do with why the site reads as compromised to Google….but Chrome may stop you anyway.

BTW — totally agree, Red.

Bri…. well, I didn’t know EVERY route, or every detail of the ones I didn’t take…but still, I knew where most of those went, and where to catch them to get home…that sort of thing…In Santa Rosa, where I live, well into the 80’s or maybe later, we still had only about 5 bus routes, and they were big loops…For instance, I was near the end of a loop, so it took me only a few minutes to get downtown, but on the way back, I had a 30 minute ride all over the west side of town before my stop.
I often walked the two miles home instead. And there was one bus per route, which means it left downtown once an hour…We have two on some routes now… and at least they no longer stop running for an extra hour or 90 minutes mid-day when the drivers have lunch.

You don’t want to know what it is like with half dozen or so 9-year old boys running around while making sugar candy!
vldazzle almost 12 years ago
Yes Essex, but is the current store candy made with natural surgar and vinager? I can doubt it now that I find Hershey using all kinds of c**p in their "chocolate. There are many things I choose to buy rather than make (first that comes to mind is Horseradish sauce ;-) I grated my own only once!
