I live 15-20 minutes aways from Greenville Village in Dearborn and they have people riding penny-farthing bicycles all over the place. It’s pretty neat!
Peddle power was one to one: one revolution of the foot pedal = one full turn of the wheel. The larger the wheel, the greater the distance traveled with each turn. But the radius of the wheel had to stop short of the length of the leg, so that was the largest wheel/longest distance per revolution. The development of the chain drive solved the peddle power ratio problem.
