Actually, pschearer, it’s Stone-Age affluence – they didn’t encounter real poverty until Europeans came over and started “improving” things for them. They didn’t use all parts of the bison because they were poor, they were rich because they used all parts of the bison. And your definition of “success” is at odds with reality; our society throws almost everything away, but more people are miserable than ever before.

Stone-Age poverty tends to make people very thrifty.
The success of a culture can be measured in terms of what they can afford to throw away.
