The downside of an artist getting an award from the king is that it ruins his reputation as a starving artist.

There was much trepidation on both sides when the Maître D handed his guest the bill.

Considering this is actually about distributing the prize money to the winning artists at the Salon, it might as well be captioned, “Paying off the peons.”

Distribution of awards to artists at the end of the 1824 Salon, January 15, 1825

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Distribution_des_r%C3%A9compenses_aux_artistes_%C3%A0_la_fin_du_Salon_de_1824,_le_15_janvier_1825.jpg

(best viewed by Google Chrome – can automatically translate most pages if necessary) has info and links that point to info about this painting, including the correct artist.

Rouget died in 1869, 23 years before this was painted. Joconde attributes it to the copier Roujat. It says the copy of Heim’s painting, of which this is a detail image, was commissioned by France’s Ministry of Education in 1892, when it was painted. I couldn’t find any other details about Roujat. Charles X, in the center, is distributing the awards, though I guess to some it appears he’s receiving something.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2000 (July 19, 2018) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.
