I asked the Circulation Manager of out local paper why I didn’t see paperboys anymore. He replied, “Most of them would quit after a week or so. They just weren’t reliable. Oh, and paper bundles kept getting stolen or torn open and scattered all the time”. (SIGH)
Nice touch with the “The Gazette” since the “Thanks To” person is from Cedar Rapids Iowa. The Gazette has been published for 135 years in Cedar Rapids.
Didn’t begin my ‘working life’ delivering papers but ended it that way. Oh, by the way, ‘Templo S. U. D.’, morning papers ARE delivered ‘at night’ a.k.a. early morning since most papers are morning papers and people like to read them with their coffee. It means getting up at around 1 am and getting on the road at around 3 am to ensure delivery of 400 to 450 papers by 7am !
And they have the privilege of using the money they get from collections (minus the customers who always seem to have some damn reason they don’t have the money right now) to pay for gas and vehicle maintenance. And as an “independent contractor,” they have the privilege of supplying their own insurance.

There’s a lot of pride in doing your job right, rain or shine. I started when I was 11.

I remember a psa about 40 odd years ago about paper delivery boys pointing out that they made more money than half the people on earth.

Sad. At least it gives them spending money, a schedule, and out of the house at least once a day.

Kid’s don’t deliver anymore. You must have a car. Remember bikes with paper carriers…canvas sacks on each side of the handle bars?

newspapers? I see those who started out bagging groceries go back to bagging groceries.

In real life, no delivery-person uses the newspaper tube; they throw the paper on the ground next to it.
