Whenever we got dirty dishes from the new dishwasher, something had stopped the spray arm, blocked the spray, or we had used a cheap dishwasher compound. I don’t have to put pots and pans in the dishwasher. They are either the new nonstick or old well seasoned cast iron. Hot water, a scrubby sponge, and maybe a couple of drops of soap and it all slides off.
When our old dishwasher died we went shopping for a replacement. I left the decision to my wife, who picked out a model that was right at $1000 on sale! I didn’t object because I couldn’t catch my breath and then it was because I was too smart to object to the choice I had left to her.
Anyway, it is fantastic. It takes more than three hours on SmartWash but dishes never come out dirty. In fact, I never realized how much grease was usually left on dishes by earlier models – these are squeaky clean. The express wash takes an hour and uses more water and electricity, but it works well, too.
I prefer to have the dishwasher work as a dish sanitizer, or more specifically a glass and silverware sanitizer so that the germs I’d miss by handwashing are at least made less. I really, really don’t want to get sick.
Hint Arlo, the ones in the cupboard are clean, look there not the dishwasher for clean ones. And when the dishwasher clean light is on, fully empty it.
Who has time to wash by hand anymore? There is just so much to do. “Labor saving devices” just free time to do other tasks. No such thing as leisure time.
I only had a dishwasher in one apartment I lived in. It made so much noise, I could hear it in the living room. Annoying. I think I used it maybe three times in the two years I lived there. I guess I’ve been washing dishes since I was about five years old and it doesn’t seem like it’s a big deal and worth needing an expensive and noisy machine.
Arlo’s right about that — always check the bottom rack. Good dishwashers work pretty well, but even they don’t do much for a really dirty pot or pan, and one of those spreads the gunk all over the load. Do the pot by hand and everything else will come out clean.
Dripstoppers Tip ~ if you have a dishwasher you never ever use, run a cleaning cycle anyway, now and again, so you know that the door seal is still in good shape. (and prevent one of the nasty surprises that can appear when a house is put up for sale)
We bought a new washer that is “energy” efficient, but we have to wash such small loads. A medium size load will not get clean. This washer takes such a small amount of water that the entire load is not all wet at the same time. I wish we had our old washer back so we could have clean laundry again.
When we were married and lived in an apartment we did not have a dishwasher. Husband grew up with one – mom rarely used hers until sometime after I married and left home. So I washed the dishes.
We bought a house – it had a dishwasher. I put in the dishes and such that had gotten dirty in the move – they came out just as grey as they had gone in (apparently dishwashers do not wash off newspaper ink). I used it on and off. It died. We replaced it. The new one stopped working – I figured out that the interlock was not locking right. Husband wanted to buy a new one. I leaned a chair against the door and that held it closed. 3 years later the pump died. We went out for a new one. I could not find one I liked and in most of them the spaces between the dish supports looked too thin for my pottery dishes. I finally picked one – and I tend towards the cheap end of appliances – it was almost $1000 – shocked both of us that I would think of spending that much. Then I read a review of it in a reliable publication. I did not buy it.
I told husband that I would think about it and wash the dishes by hand. There are two of us – how long does same take -no longer than loading the dishwasher takes? He said to me “You can’t hand wash the dishes every day.” I pointed out to him that I did so – plus for extended family dinners for 9 years in our apartment. He insisted that we had a dishwasher in the apartment – I asked him where it had been. He thought about it and realized we had not had one. So I wash the dishes, etc. by hand. Washed them after dinner (lunch out most days and no breakfast) and now am about to wash them after our prebed snack.
Our biggest rule has always been – no dirty dishes are left sitting and waiting to be washed – wash after using.
Our dishwasher was purchased new 5 years ago. 5 years of clean dishes and dry dishes and it is so quiet my wife sometimes forgets it is running and has opened it in the middle of a cycle. You Da’Dad say you have no dishwasher. How do you know if they clean or not?
My daughter (35+) wants to do dishes by hands, but I cannot seem to get thru to her that the BOTTOMS and SIDES of pots also get dirty, not just the insides. Sigh. Her dad was the same way. I do appreciate them trying to help, but I still wind up doing some of the dishes when I get home from work.

I wash our dishes on normal wash. It cleans and drys in about an hr. Put it on heavy and it’s a 2 hr. wash.

We’ve discovered that if you use Dishwasher “cleaner” monthly the scan is much less necessary.

You could have checked for the green “ready” light.

I don’t get it. I’ve never used a dishwasher.

Maybe Arlo should go to the doctor. Every time he unloads the dishwasher he sees spots before his eyes.
