National Jelly Bean Day. I got some jelly beans on Monday when Easter candy was reduced to 75% off. Orange and red are my favorite ones.

I made some peanut butter suet cakes for the birds again yesterday. It takes very little time in the freezer to freeze them so I can put them out for the birds. So I put out one suet cake, then I saw how empty one of the other bird feeders was. I went back to my porch to get seed to fill that feeder and while I was filling it, this friendly little downy woodpecker landed on a branch of my apple tree no more than 3 feet from where I was standing. So, I backed away and hurried into the house to grab my camera to get a picture of the downy woodpecker enjoying the suet. But by the time I got back outside (it was less than one minute) there was a grackle at the suet feeder and the little downy woodpecker was way up high in the tree. The grackle flew off but the woodpecker didn’t return to the suet feeder. It soon flew away too. Photo op lost :(

Oh Ches, that was adorable. You really have a sweetie streak deep down. Unfortunately, so deep you can’t usually find it.

It was a week ago today, that I lost my beloved Petey and I want to thank all of the posters that sent sympathy post notes. I’m grateful and wanted to acknowledge that to the posters.

I think I may have figured out why all the neighborhood cats like to divert through my yard. Besides the cardinals nesting in one of my fruit trees, I have around ten nesting pairs of starlings and what we call “itty-bitty birds” in the bushes around the foundation of the house. I am sure that the cats are checking on the welfare of the birds daily. Or maybe not.
