I never tried to dig to China as a kid, but I did bury a chunk of coal. Itâs probably still buried in my old backyard. Think I should go check to see if itâs a diamond yet?
When we were living in Florida, my then 10-year-old son had a friend sleep over. The next morning, these two boys decided they wanted to see if they could push my garden hose into our sandy soil. They pushed it in pretty far, until they realized they could not pull it out. Being 10, they must have hoped no-one would notice and left. A few hours later, I needed to water something, and went to find my hose. I found it just as they had left it, stuck tight in the sand. I puzzled for a moment as to how it got there, and then I realized. I went in search of my son, the perpetrator. He âfessed up (what else could he do?). He said his friend helped him. Accordingly, we called up the friendâs parents, who we were good friends with, and told them about the dirty deed. Without even our having to ask, they said that they would bring their boy over. Those two spend the next hour-and-a-half digging out my hose, with me videotaping the whole affair. By the time they were able to get it out, they had dug a four-and-a-half foot deep hole in my yard! It has been close to 30 years since that happened, but we have never let our son forget.
