Jon: Liz, I'm stuck on your gift. I need a hint.
Liz: Oh, Jon, you don't have to get me anything.
Jon: She's REALLY not playing fair.
Garfield: Love is such a fun spectator sport.
when we say “dont have to get me anything” we really are saying,, “don’t get me anything thats tacky, not from the heart or something your mom would rather get”,
Love is not a fun spectator sport, when they are getting along, it can be quite annoying, especially when they are getting along, and I am trying to sleep.
keltii - thanks! I always wanted to know what “nothing for me.” meant … can you tell me, when I ask “what’s wrong?” and she says “NOTHING!” what does that mean?
johnnydoc5 - it can get loud when they get along … beds squeek etc LOL
can you tell me, when I ask “what’s wrong?” and she says “NOTHING!” what does that mean?
It means, you did something wrong and she is making the assumption that you are sensitive enough to either figure it out and fix it without her drawing you pictures or you really did mean to do something to upset her. If you ask her what’s wrong, she gets exasperated because (in her mind) no one could possibly be that thick.
I figured that one out because I caught myself doing it, yes I am ashamed of myself.
Sometimes we women don’t play fair (and don’t think it doesn’t pain me to admit it!) We expect a man to be a mind reader and he isn’t. We expect him to know things instinctively that he doesn’t. We need to speak more plain. This becomes even worse around Valentine’s Day when for some reason a lot of women think it’s all about them instead of about both of you. Liz should just tell Jon what she wants.
@BananaSlug - You would be one of the very few women who could actually mean it, but have you really gotten “nothing” when you say you don’t want anything and not had bad feelings about it?
Maybe she really doesn’t want anything. I have everything I need and I don’t want a bunch of things cluttering up my apt. Now I tell people to donate the money to St. Jude’s or someplace. Lots of times they give me online charity gift card and I can chose where the money goes. My bf still gets me stuff I really have no need or want for, but he is being thoughtful.

when a woman says she needs nothing, she means nothing back if you don’t give me something that I like

I hate the kind of woman that expects you to read their mind and get them what they want without them having to tell you.

Sighhhh! Jon, you are such an idiot! Go and buy something special for Liz since you and Liz involve a romantic relationship.

This would work just fine as a GMG. Jon’s comment in the last panel is apt, but it’s Garfield’s that makes the whole thing work.

Liz: You don’t need to get me a gift
Jon: Okay
Liz: You could argue the point a LITTLE!!!

I’m female, and when I say, “you don’t have to get me anything”, I mean you don’t have to get me anything.
Am I weird? :(
