Ah, yes. “Celibate 80’s.” With the invention of VHS things just went behind closed doors in most cases. Even as the yuppie majority was preaching one thing publicly, it was all the rage to do something entirely opposite in private–and with others of like mind. The revelation of HIV didn’t do a thing to slow it down, but it did winnow people who didn’t adopt safer practices. Not that even that stopped a spread thanks to the insidiously subtle and slow onset of actual AIDS.
Methinks Mama Nature was telling us we’d overpopulated and things would have to change. Unfortunately like any bio-weapon, it hurt more innocents than it did those who were part of the problem. And medical science wasn’t exactly too quick to catch on, either. The AMA in particular has a long, tragic history of being slow to adapt to new realities or getting past petty human prejudices.
