Why isn't tomorrow called Woodchuck Day? Or Marmot Day? "And where did we come up with a holiday that's neither religious nor historic..." "Not to mention something florists and greeting card companies can milk?" "Six more weeks until Spring Break..." "Caulfield must have seen his shadow."

According to Wikipedia, Groundhog Day dates back to at least 1841, which sounds historical enough to me.

Does anyone else think Caulfield looks like Franklin from Peanuts? Also, that is a good question. Who came up with Groundhog Day?

Caulfield will bring this question up a lot over the years, and I’m surprised that Mallette has never had him look it up. It’s a Christian holiday—Candlemas. The belief was that if there were clear skies on Candlemas, it meant a long winter; clouds meant an early spring.
