“That’s what I was wondering, Snoopy as the Ace and doing a happy dance I get, but I don’t remember any surgeon. It would have made more sense to have lawyer instead, a la Snoopy’s vulture phase.”

It’s ALL Snoopy. I don’t have a specific memory of Snoopy being a world-famous surgeon, but it’s entirely in character and from the context it wouldn’t make sense for it to be a reference to anybody else. And of course Adolf IS doing a lawyer, in the last panel (but he needs the hat).

“Joe Cool” would have been nearly as iconic as the World War I Flying Ace, but I don’t think a vulture woud have worked well (for reasons it would take too much space to explain).

Didn’t Snoopy use to dance with the bunnies? Instead of chasing them!

I don’t know why, but my link to the “Many Lives of Snoopy” page was removed.Snoopy first appeared as a WWI Army surgeon on November 24, 1966.
