One year, my dad went with us dressed as a bum and carrying a shot glass. He meant it as a joke, but it didn’t take long before we were chaperoning him.

My parents let me go as a bum when I was 10, complete with empty booze bottles of Mom’s. People didn’t find it funny at all. It wasn’t surprising years later to learn that Mom was a raging alcoholic! I never thought about that event until just now!
