Our rule was that Daddy had to go downstairs and check to see if Santa had arrived. Nobody but Dad was allowed downstairs until he rang the bell.
To keep them occupied, stocking were taken down from the mantle, filled, and then left in the children’s rooms. When they woke, they’d all pile onto mom & dad’s bed to open stocking stuffers.

The reason the night lasts so long is Santa has a magic watch to slow down time. How else can he get to all those houses in one night?
