Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for June 04, 2010
Transcript:
Alice: What happened to your final shoebox diorama school project? Petey: I hated it. So I did a new, simpler version! See? It's me with a big, giant, brain-stuffed head, to show how much I learned this year! The zigzags are lightning bolts shooting out of my newly powerful mind! Alice: Wow! They should let you skip right straight to college!

RT for Reuben Award 2011 !!!
This strip lately just proves that.

Out of curiosity, I went and looked at Bizarro (I hadn’t seen it before)…………And not to disparage anyone, Cul de Sac wraps circles around that strip.

Good luck with that, Petey.
As far as I’m concerned, Bizaro can’t stand up to a good many strips I read.

Reading a comic for one day,is not really giving it a fair shot. Some days Bizarro absolutely kills. The Reuben Award is voted on by other cartoonists, so it’s kind of political, like the Oscars. I’m sure RT will get the nod from his peers and win the award someday, because this strip is one of the best.

@Hugh B. Hayve………….I subscribe to Dailyink. com…….I have access to go back in the archives, which I did.
It was certainly NOT for “one day” of a comic.

Skipping right ahead to college – great idea. In fact, those lightening bolts look like maybe a mini-bad acid trip or something. So maybe Petey would fit in college after all…

It’s hard to compare this strip to Bizarro – they are doing different things. Each is excellent in its own way. Cul de Sac develops characters in continuing stories – and creates a whole rather whacky world. Bizarro is one-off flashes of weirdness – and of course the art is often spectacular. I don’t judge them against each other, I just appreciate what each has to offer.

I think Petey’s life in college would be quite the experience.

Petey has definately been empowered with a big head.

When he gets to college, he can recycle the idea for his Master’s thesis (although he’ll need a bigger box). I’m sure the examination panel will be highly impressed!

No fritzoid in college he will be required to think outside the box, but in Petey’s case I foresee several instances where he will be forced to think inside his locker. He is bound to get stuffed inside occasionally from fellow students.

Naw, as his head expands to accommodate his ever-increasing brainpower, Petey won’t FIT in a locker after about another couple of years. He won’t even be in High School by then. (Do they even have lockers in college?)
The “thinking outside of the box” connection is so self-evidently appropriate that, like T.H. Huxley first reading Darwin’s Origin of Species, I’m disgusted with myself for not thinking of it first. However, Petey being Petey, I can’t imagine him being willing (or able) to do it. More likely, he’ll define the box according to his own specifications, perhaps a cardboard tesseract…

Hey, change that lightening from his head to hands and you have one of the fun side-effects of trying to get off one of the medications I used to take. Sure, it wasn’t real lightening shooting from my fingers, but it felt as though it were. NASTY!

Oh, gosh, now Petey’s head looks EVEN MORE like a lightbulb!
