Mom: Petey, your Cartoon Camp is at the Rec Center where you had your oboe recital! Remember that? Petey: Yeah. At the memory of his horrifying oboe recital, Peter Otterloop, Jr. has a sudden out-of-body experience. How could I ever forget my oboe recital? Mom: Well, cartoon camp will be more fun! Are you excited? Petey: I'm beside myself.

Yay for puns!
I remember that recital, it’s where he met Ernesto! Who could ever forget that? Go out-of-body experiences! Done cheering now.

This is such a let-down after the excitement of the parade yesterday.

I’m glad to see that Petey’s other self is properly seat-belted. How many of us have lost our out-of-body bodies through car accidents…

I find Petey more interesting than Alice.

It’s a cartoon camp! What could go wrong in a camp that involves pretty much just sitting around and drawing?
As a cartoonist, the only things I fear are whale biologists and hand cramps.

I find Petey more interesting than Alice.
I sometimes feel that way, too. He’s more complex.

When both Peteys start chewing their arms off, then it’s time to worry…
Petey’s more complex than Alice, but he’s also basically inert - he’s reactive rather than active, and his stories more depend on him being put into events rather than initiating them. I think the two siblings balance each other well.

I’m laughing twice as hard for some reason…

Oooh, this seems like the beginning of a great arc!

I just re-read my earlier post and realize it came across totally wrong! I meant that the thrill of the parade contrasted with Petey’s angst creates tension…
And the tension itself is artful because it mirrors real life. I mean, today has been so quiet at our house, not like the thrilling activity of July 4.
[my brain is a bit sluggish today, too]

Now we’ll get to see the both of them try to gnaw their arms off.
