Petey: Be careful when you touch the trees! Alice: Why? Petey: They exude a highly sticky toxic sap to catch the small birds, lizards and rodents that form their diet. Alice: EW! Really? Petey: Yes. They're coniferous, you know.
Now THAT’s FUNNY!!!! This is one of my all time favorite strips. Thank you Richard. I’ve been following your work for nearly 20 years now. Love the Richard’s Poor Almanac.
Coniferous … carnivorous … what’s the diff? I’m assuming that birds nesting in the tree have a symbiotic relationship. They led the tree to believe that the baby birds will be hors d’oeuvres when they are big enough. No wonder baby birds are so quick to fly the coop!
I thought that coniferous meant someone who only ate cones. Like a non-Euclidean vegan is one who only eats foods with a negative curvature (i.e. Pringles).
Pines (especially like the blue spruce back in IL) provice very good shelter for the birds. My native pine was very fast growing and has more space between branches (grew over 20’ since I planted it less than 3’ tall in 1999). Birds hang out there in the day, but nest and sleep in the ficus and the cypress.

Junipers are in the same family as Venus Fly Traps. That’s why a common pine joke is to yell out “hey, your fly is open!”

Oh dear Petey! I can’t tell if he’s pulling Alice’s leg, or maybe has a Bostonian science teacher.

Petey’s not far wrong. On Pickles a few days back, Grandma was attacked by a tree frog.

Petey would never leave the house if he was my neighbor. My backyard is a forest of conifers.

The coniferous tree must be related to the kite-eating tree.
