I have beautiful penmanship. Unfortunately our two youngest grandchildren never learned cursive, and can’t read it. Their mother claims I only write to embarrass them.
Recently, I had some work done on my heating system. I was handed an iPhone to “sign” to authorize the work. “Just make a mark,” I was told, “It doesn’t matter if it’s legible.” This is the future — legal documents being “signed” by making a mark on a touch pad. A generation of people who have no signature.
In the mid 70’s, I taught cursive writing for 30 minutes a day during the entire third grade. And, the kids were doing some pretty beautiful writing by the end of the year. The other third grade teacher in the building ignored the curriculum directive that mandated this and just told the kids to start writing in cursive. By the end of sixth grade, when you compared their writing, you couldn’t tell the difference. And, anyway, if you really want cursive, there are fonts for that.
Hope there are no left-handed kids in Miss Bliss’ class. Performing right-handed exercises with right-handed characters and a right-handed pen held in your left hand for a teacher that can’t see there’s a problem can be frustrating!
My daughters and I are left handed. I taught them to write with fountain pens and no smearing. They text and email, but when you get a hand written letter from them (or me) you know it is a sign of respect. The Mrs is a Scot and they still teach handwriting in schools.

What is Dill doing spying on his older brother’s love interests?

I’m afraid that Miss Bliss is fighting a losing battle.

So… Who’s the guest artist this week?

When these originally ran in 2012, Richard introduced the guest artist with a blog entry (one line):

Yesterday’s and the next 2 Sunday’s are reruns of Sunday strips by Richard from March, 2009.

Poor Miss Bliss! Maybe she does need a nap!
And, Dill, if your (older) brother finds out you’ve been reading his notes to the girl next door, you may be taking a trebuchet-ride!

The notes sent, no doubt, by trebuchet.
