No hamster, just a cat and a few goldfish. No paper route, but I worked in the local supermarket from age 12 unti l left town at 18… my first paycheck was $15 – eureka!!
My brother had a paper route, but wouldn’t get up in the morning, so I did it. Each paper had to be assembled with supplements and ads and then wrapped if weather was bad-Chicago Tribune used to be big and thick-especially Sunday!
Kids don’t have paper routes any more. They’re all delivered by adults with cars, not boys with wagons. I wonder if stock in the Radio Flyer company took a dip when newspapers stopped hiring kids. Paper route yes; hamster no (I had a cat, and she would have eaten a hamster).
no paper route…we lived in the country…bought the sunday paper on the way home from church…had horses and dogs and barn cats…mom still has the same parrot we got her for Mothers day when I was 8…and I am 58 now…lol
We also live in a rural area but our son had a paper route to deliver in the neighboring town. Only thing was that he couldn’t carry all of the papers he had to deliver in his bicycle basket so we had to drive the rest of the papers in the car for him to reload his basket. Didn’t pay much but it was a responsibility. We’ve pretty much always had cats and dogs, plus rabbits—no hamsters.

I had a hamster. It got out of its cage and jumped off the third floor landing.
