When I was 10, I don’t think very many kids my age knew anything about that topic… I was behind even that curve, and knew nothing till I was TWELVE.
And back then, parents were mortified to discuss it.
But Elliott is 10 now… he’s been 10 since 2008.
Modern parents and kids usually start that discussion at age 4 or 5, not 10. There are books for preschoolers about pregnancy and anatomy..
It’s hard for me to believe that any 21st century middle schooler is still unfamiliar with at least the science part of the birds and the bees… and by then he might know a few biological facts his parents don’t.
I doubt the teacher is asking him to gather the type of information Peter is worried about…
But yes… there are even lots of apps for that!
Most are for teens and adults, but I’ve heard of a couple for kids.
It’s suggested that kids and parents view them together… but you know that often doesn’t happen.
When I was in Junior High (yes I’m that old) and on the AV squad, we were asked to set up a film for the Girl Scout meeting and then leave the auditorium. We were not to stay. Being curious we secretly climbed up to the catwalk in the ceiling to where the spotlights were to see what this forbidden film was all about. It was a film about puberty. We looked at each other and said “we already know this stuff” so we quietly left fully appreciating why our presents was not be desired.
One of my aunts was a sex therapist. I had access to her library. But had to discuss all reading with her. And any and all video. Another sex therapist in her building was Edie Falco’s mother. I saw a lot of her previous work. She appreciated my compliments on it.
The real joke is that your kids probably know more about sex than you do. Not necessarily in any practical sense, but they could probably define most of the nouns and verbs, however informal.
