Do people really dance to that tune? “Dance Hall Days” seemed a lot better choice, when they were dancing to it in their theater years ago. Maybe there’s a subtle message in the song’s lyrics – the mark is so eager to purchase the Lincoln memorabilia that she will look for a reason to believe that Silver’s scam is all true, even though deep inside she probably realizes that it isn’t.
I first knew this song “Reason to Believe” as performed by Glen Campbell on his Wichita Lineman album. In fact, I’m not sure I was ever aware of any other version, until Rod Stewart came along with his cover of it.
(I tried to reply in the thread above, where others were commenting on the song, but that reply function is not working this morning.)
Another song that might be appropriate is “Come Dancing” by the Kinks. “Come on sister, have yourself a ball, don’t be afraid to come dancing, it’s only natural” (or is it?)
Actually, the dancing is the least creepy aspect of their relationship. There have been plenty of brother-sister teams in dancing, skating, etc. Certainly one of the best known was that of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner (and sister) Adele. They broke into Vaudeville as a dance team while they were still young children, and they continued to dance together as they grew up and were featured in a number of hit Broadway shows (including some by the Gershwin brothers). The dance team finally broke up when Adele got married and Fred was finally forced to build up his solo talents.
As in the con business, so in their personal lives, I see Silver as the Nitrate more carefree and “in the moment,” not thinking very deeply about anything—not even his work. Sprocket, on the other hand, seems more complex and a ton more creepy. She is the one who seems to be too clingy and too “familiar” with her brother, over whose head most of it, if not all, passes. And she is for sure the dangerous one. She is the one about whom Public Domain should, but quite likely doesn’t, worry.
I wasn’t able to return here today until 11:00 pm. I did not know until then that all those duplicate comments had actually posted; they appeared not to when I clicked the button. Sorry if anyone got unduly distracted. I will go back up and remove them now.
Intro (skip if you’ve already read any of the previous intros):
Hello, greetings, casual readers of past Tracy stories. I’m here because I’m on 2 missions. The first is something I’ve never done before, read each Tracy story by Mike Curtis (or his occasional guest writer) in one sitting each. I feel his stories are worth it. IMHO, Curtis is by far the best post-Gould writer this strip has ever had, and we’re all lucky to have him.
My second mission is to provide an immediately useful Featured Comment whenever needed. My 3 friends below will reply to me. You can read their replies if you like, but their only real purpose is to bump up this comment to the Featured Comment.
There are 2 basic types of immediately useful Featured Comments: the first type is to provide you with a Mumblespeak translator when needed. The other type (this type) is anytime that day’s strip quotes a real song. I will provide an html to a recording to that song so you’ll know the tune even if you’ve never heard it before.
End Intro
The song the Nitrates are dancing to is “Reason to Believe”. For reasons I’ll get into in the replies, it’s most like the version recorded by the Carpenters. So here’s their version of the song:

A little joy and fun before Public Domain brings heartache and pain perhaps?

Hardly the first time they’ve danced, of course.

Only 37 comments yesterday. That’s pretty low no matter how you cut the cheese!

Any chance Silver and Sprocket are not biologically brother and sister?

Hopefully, they call each other “Brother and Sister” in the religious realm. I’d hate to see the dark side, as has been suggested.
