Good Morning, Leaky — like it or not!! Bwah hah hah!
Yes, I agree about learning manners — and the great mystery is that MARLENE knows any to teach him!
Of course Burl speaks up in favor of skipping them. His sense of entitlement is so huge he can hardly carry it around.
There are other mysteries in this one, too.One big one: the Shemps are actually giving Timmy a party??
I note that most of the attendees are their own middle-aged friends, not Timmy’s little pals.Presumably Marlene and Dale are shaking them down for gifts…..and even “paying back” some nice dinners with a (small) piece of Sara Lee cake, some Kool-Aid and a (small) handful of potato chips.
Then we have the mysterious one, two or zero children next to Joy, in the background …. are those kids, and is one Timmy’s little brother, the long unseen Todd?
And to the right of that, is that man holding a little girl in his arms, or is there some suspiciously adult canoodling going on?
And last — I am very very glad that what it says on Dale’s shirt is not true…. cos he’s wearing a shirt.
Happy Birthday, Timmy! Enjoy your bottle-cap favors.
@Susan — I think you’ve got the right of it, with the Shemps shaking down the adults for gifts as well as considering this ‘entertaining’ and so pay-back for other events to which they’d been invited. Then again, didn’t we recently see Burl saying something exceedingly similar, about how so-and-so owed them TWO dinners?
Looks like everybody pretty much has both the Shemps and Burl figgered out. And Timmy gets used yet again by the adults in his life. I have to defer to Burl, because he is the expert on fake, after all.
Re: Thank You cards, when we were little our mom made us write the notes and have them in the next day’s mail. I still do it.
And GymShoe, I hope Raspberry read what you said to her late on yesterday’s…. and thanks for the mention.
I’d been wondering whether what I said made any sense to you. Glad if it did, to any degree.
And yeah, I love it when everybody jumps into the conversation.
I was a newcomer here myself in May, 2011, along with a lot of others, so I can’t be part of some entrenched clique! Nor would I want to be.
Oh — I’ve been wanting to say, if you really got your 1st cell phone at 35, either you’re quite a bit younger than me, or that was one honkin’ big phone!
G’morning all! @Susan, I thought she is rewarding them with pizza as well as bottlecap favors and the sheet cake, tho’ I cant quite read the end of the list.@Purple, I don’t remember when Burl said anyone owes him 2 dinners.I’ll try to remember to wish Raspberry a happy B-day tomorrow; my oldest boy had his on Tuesday (also with no party, tho’ I called to chat.). I wonder why Joy is with the children instead of with the others (or rather why the others are not with their guests, as the party seems to still be in progress). More display of manners, I guess ;-P
I still don’t have a cell phone and no plans to have one. I used to have “portable” phones back when they first came out, but they always went dead just when I really wanted them (waiting for calls while out in the garden). I don’t want calls when I’m not home and land lines still have much better sound.
@PipeTobacco: Re: yesterday’s comment, I just read it today. About your comments on eavsedropping, reminds me of an incident.
I am from northern Ohio, but my dad is from WV, and he grew up in the backwoods of the hills. I do not exagerate when I say my grandparents lived a lot lke the backhome shots of the Beverly Hillbillies. We normally went down at least once a year and spent a few days. My grandparents still used an old phone that was pretty much a wooden box attatched to the wall. She lifted a reciever (which looked like a mordern reciever on the phones of the 60’s) and would turn a crank to get the operator. She protested in the 70’s when they phased out that phone system and she had to get a dial phone.
Getting back to the story: I woke up and could smell bacon, I did love her breakfasts. I went downstairs and she was sitting with the phone to her ear. I said, “Morning Grandma, what smells good?” She frowned and franticly waved her hand at me. She covered the mouth piece and slowly hung the phone up. She said, “you have to be quiet, I was listening to (some name) talking to (some name) and I don’t want them to know I am on the line.”Ah, perhaps I have roots with the Pennys, um NO!!
Morning Crustwoodians! That includes you Raspberry!
Grandma is right to make him say “thank you”, except she forgot to add the other part. You say “thank you for coming”, then write a note if the person or people gave you a gift. My mom required us to write notes when we got a gift. I still write notes, sometimes via email. Looks like Leaky may have gotten hacked? Happy birthday Timmy!
I think that Gymshoe had it right yesterday when he mentioned the different time zones as a factor in posting. If someone does not come back and check the posts, they miss seeing anything addressed to them. No slight is intended.Susan is a very gregarious person, and easy to befriend. Leaky and I became friends because I loved his Rhoda avatar. Each of you will write your own story here.
Old phone systems were not as easy to use. Few people today would have patience with dial phones. I can remember when local numbers required less than 7 numbers dialed (possibly 3 or 4?) but those old phones were so easy to wire up and even add switches to etc, because they were all fairly thick wire systems ;-) When I had a separate business line at home (needed with 4 teens) I added a switch to a single phone to use it for either line. Getting free extensions in the old house was easy too especially with a full basement.
@Mikie, don’t worry, almost everybody has something of the Pennys in their background; that’s partly why we find it funny.
Well Rasp, I was going to wait until after midnight to wish you a very Happy Birthday, but this avatar looks too good to wait. Lets all dig in and eat……………….Have a very happy day Raspberryice54
Summers in the 50s my parents took us to a farm near Wisc Dells and we used outdoor “facilities” (holes over quicklime) and stayed in cabins with a single room and one ceiling lightbulb. The afternoons hiking over the sandstone dells and picking “devils walking sticks (a kind of bamboo)” was great, but I was happy to get back to civilization (even though TV was hardly begun and dad had just plugged in 1 ton of AC into our gas heating system).
By 66 I had been married since 59 and already had my 4 kids and we never had a party line then. I was just watching the latest episode of “Criminal Minds” where they said girls remain impressed by music they liked when 14 (51 for me) so I was just checking and every one of the romantic songs from that year (on Wiki) ARE still very dear to me – very interesting!
@Purple, thanks; I don’t remember strips back three months (altogether I read over 3 dozen daily but that was a good one.@Leaky, I danced to a lot of classic rock in those days and also “interpretive dance” to Jealouusy and Domino ;-P I knew the words of all the good ballads back then too (loved to sing)

Me too, Mikie — and I even have a couple of friends who tease me about sending them notes, but I still do it.
Not for every small gift, but for thoughtful ones, or if someone hosts a gathering or does something especially nice.
And Leaky — You need to be more aware of cell phone cameras.
Look Here!
