Around here it’s potato filling which is basically bread filling mixed with mashed potatos. In many local restaurants it’s available as a side dish year-round.
I have actually been part of a very similar debate, except it was about the pumpkin desert. (I wanted to make a pumpkin chocolate cake again, my mother wanted the traditional pumpkin pie. I ended up making both.)

Depends on the family, I know some people who know nothing but “Stovetop”, I feel sorry for them, but they’re happy.
