Outside should always be the first question.

Our dog learned pretty quickly to scratch on the door to be let out. One afternoon many years later, while I was sitting at the dining room table (and screened from view of the front door), I heard a thin, scraping sound from the aluminum storm door. I asked my brother where the dog was; she was sitting on the couch beside him. Then we heard the sound again. We both got up and went to the door. The cat was sitting there looking at us as if to say, “It works for the d@mn dog; are you gonna let me out!?” We did, of course.
