Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 21, 2006
Transcript:
Elias: So why did it bother you so much when the medic removed your helmet? B.D.: I felt naked. I've worn protective head gear my whole life. My mother was neurotic about safety, so I grew up having to wear helmets around the house. Elias: Wow...that's different. B.D.: Check that. Elias: Even as a baby? B.D.: She used coffee cans.

Finally, an explanation!
KnifeSmile about 7 years ago
The real explanation is that early in the strip the helmet served as a symbolic device. But as the strip got more and more real and BD became a more important character it became more and more important for the helmet to be real. Hence why there’s now a real life explanation for it – Trudeau couldn’t avoid it any longer.

I admit freely: I cried when they took off his helmet. End of an era.
