You can count on me!

Who in their right mind is going to take time out of each day to read something that is so blatantly fictitious. Not me. I will always skip the news and read the comics.

I’m commenting online about Doonesbury while my paper is still on the doorstep. What would my father say?

Learned to read upside down print. My Dad got the paper first and I couldn’t wait to read the comics, so did it upside down while he had them right side up. Even 50 years later I still can read almost as fast upside down!

My dad would buy the Sunday Daily News which had a HUGE (it seemed to me) funny section. We would lie on our stomachs on the living room floor (my sister, Dad and me) and he would read them to us. We girls never got “Smilin’ Jack.” We loved Mary Perkins On Stage and Brenda Starr! The only paper that I know of that can compare today is/was The Star-Ledger out of Newark and even they have “stupid” ones now…Only a few cartoonists actually “get it.”

To read the strips I like (and not be at the mercy of editors who, quite frankly, have never really liked comics) I visit 2 websites besides GoComics. When I see one that’s funny, instead of sharing them in the family room I send links to my kids in NY. Maybe if GoComics had a Facebook page…

*Barbaratoo are you talking about the Sunday New York Daily New? I grew up in North Dakota and every Sunday my parents would by the Daily New. The Paper had 3 sections and was printed magazine style. The News part of the paper was tabloids of the trashiest order, but the Magazine section and the Comics were great. The comics went on for page after page. I loved Ric O’Shea and Dondie.

Yeah, but think of all those trees that get chopped down to make newspapers.

The small town I teach in doesn’t have a daily newspaper. The only paper most of my kids see is the Louisville Journal in the library. And they don’t even read the funnies. It’s sad. I often print out and post comics from here in my classroom, hoping to lure them into reading the comics. “The first one is free, kiddies…”

.I saved some old newspapers from certain historical events in the sixties It WAS a huge comic section back in the day……..it was several pages…and the size!—-the old newspapers were fully 3 inches wider and 2 inches longer and much thicker than today’s versions …..

My 16 year old grandson just loves the comics. They don’t get the paper so I have to save them for him every week:>D

I used to spend a liesurely Sunday morning with all the color comics, keeping up with the short strips during the week. Somehow as I got older most of the comics got stupider (Mssr Trudeau’s work excepeted) at about the same rate the paper did.

I’m quite content to recieve Doonesbury and Calvin & Hobbes on my computer or mobile phone and leave the trees alone. Go GoComics! I’ll support your advertisers so you can continue to pay Mssr Trudeau! (No, I don’t follow twitter, so I only have the strip to get Roland’s tweets! I am thinking of upgrading my GPS voices though.)

I finally put my newspaper subscription out of it’s misery , last year . Since then , I’ve jumped into the world of web comics and found all my favorites and more , much , much more .

You are right about THAT, brother! The best comics can reveal the truth, point out glaring inconsistencies and MAKE YOU LAUGH at the same time.

Sadly, without the newspapers, the web comics will also disappear. Many of the old strips were role models for youngsters as well as entertainment. Maybe role models for adults too???

I’m looking for a screen cleaner that leaves the scent of newsprint.

Still at age 70 the first section I read each morning is the funny page. Have to find the ones the paper deemed not popular on the web.

I love the comics. They are a cheep drunk. I don’t

worry about my troubles while I’m worrying about

the troubles of 2 cows, Poncho, etc etc etc etc

I remember when there were two sections of Sunday comics, each about 4 or 6 pages. Even the dailies covered three pages. these days papers run far fewer comics and tell you to access more online (!?)

The only reason i still get the paper delivered each day is because i’m a journalist (ok laid-off journalist), local news, the horoscope, the crossword and the comics of course. Most of my comics reading these days is online tho.

Susan001 - Great minds think alike! I completed today’s (12/13) NYT puzzle with no cheating in about 2 hours. Okay, my husband reminded me it was “Hector” and not “Hermes” for the victim of Achilles but…

“So why not text the kids right now and ask them to join you in the family room?”
