Remember when Elvis got drafted?… can you imagine anything like that happening with the pop stars of today? I’m all for it, let’s get some entertainment value out of our defense budget.
Well, just let him take point, get a bit ahead of you, turn around, and leave him out there. He wouldn’t notice because he’d be telling the jungle how great he is for at least two klicks!
Great toon GT. It is frightening to think of many things, past and future, involving trump. It has been proposed by Michael Moore that whenever we go to war, the first kids to go would be the kids of CEOs and members of Congress. Everyone contributed during WWII.
Both sides of the political divide can make a list of their opponents that avoided the draft. The Left can start with Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Rush Limbaugh, George Will, Bill O’Reilly, Donald Trump.
The right can list Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, Garry Trudeau
What concerns me about Trump’s deferment is that he can’t remember which foot had the heel spurs. My wife thinks it was whichever one is currently stuck in his mouth.
I wonder if GT is going to write about Mrs. C’s e-mail scandal. I think not. I also wonder if GT ever takes commercial air transportation, after all. they don’t have any aircraft without right wings and with two left wings.
Trudeau opposed the war, but he has done more for veterans than any of our resident bile-spillers. He’s spent more time in battlezone countries than our bellicose armchair generals, and he’s had their backs when they got home and needed help.
.
Trump has second-guessed active soldiers, former prisoners of war, wounded vets, and the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty. But he knows that his military school experience makes him an expert, because it was just like the service he avoided.
Personally I was glad to see Trudeau show a couple of vets that are not blindly following Trump. I’ve talked to several that are supporting him for the ridiculous reason of “’cuz vets always support Republicans”.
As fun as it has been to see Trudeau depicting Trump, maybe it will be a thing of the past soon. Get out your safety goggles, soon it will be raining glass from the ceiling!
Funny how Bush Junior, Cheney, Limbaugh, Medved etc. all weasel out of defending their nation during times of war but are more than happy to commit others and their children to it.
FWIW, the internets tell me that Trudeau was rated medically unqualified for service, due to ulcers. He was also a student from 1966 to 1971 and probably could have gotten a student deferment, but due to his medical condition that didn’t come up.
Also fwiw it is not hypocritical for a critic of war not to enlist. It is however hypocritical for a proponent of war to evade the draft while foisting the burden of service on others.
Trudeau and Cheney are not in the same category. Cheney has often said he supported the war but had no intention to serve. Trudeau opposed the war and didn’t want to see any American soldiers sent to Vietnam.
As a sufferer of heel spurs myself, can I assure everyone that yes, they are a thing, and yes, they are a little painful, but otherwise pretty benign and easy to work around and deal with most everyday things, including walking, playing golf, and things like that. I can also see, however, what an issue they would be in combat, and why those with heel spurs would not be desirable as soldiers. So can we please stop faulting Donald Trump for not being in Vietnam because of heel spurs? Trust me, there are a lot more actual good reasons to not like Trump, as a candidate, human being, or both.
And, as usual, the ‘comments’ have devolved into mud-slinging and ‘holier than thou’ remarks.. (witness ‘Mallard Fillmore’ at another website) and so, this tired old soul’s only comment besides noting the fact that BD should be approaching seventy years of age by now, is that I escaped the draft by enlisting in ‘54 and lasted for 8 years (Army and Air Force) before ’Nam (officially) broke out but I was offered a better job in Electronics. Lost four ’previous service’ friends in that war and to what end? Back in Army Basic at Ft. Dix, my barracks was filled with everyone from NYC Jewish Lawyers to poor white-trash rednecks from WVA..EVERYone got an education in THAT recipe of life !! Seems we’ve grown from a generation or two that’s ‘just too self-important’ to stand up for The Nation..But I’m preaching to th…What? the Choir left? (mumble, cuss, grumble, etc, etc, etc…‘Submit’)
Trudeau went to Yale starting in 1966. College Students were not required to register for the draft. He completed graduate and postgraduate work until 1973. The first draft lottery took place on December 7, 1969, the last took place on December 7, 1972. He has won several awards for his work with veterans and active military.
Interesting historical irony: the president Trump most resembles to my mind is Teddy Roosevelt (in a demented way, to be sure, and Teddy was already a bit demented) and Teddy’s big claim to fame was exactly taking a hill out of pure insane machismo. Donald Trump: Teddy Roosevelt without the brains, foolhardy courage, or progressive political vision.
You guys who are carping about Trudeau criticizing Trump’s avoidance of Vietnam, have you really neglected to notice the real point of the strip… the punch line? Trudeau is saying that the American soldiers were safer without him there. . (I almost said that Trudeau might even be implying that America was safer without Trump in Vietnam. But the I realized that if he had been killed in action, he wouldn’t be a Presidential candidate… and he might have actually *earned’ a Purple Heart, rather than receiving one as a sort of party gift from a soldier who did earn it.)
lefty, They don’t understand you are talking about Trump receiving a purple heart by path other than injury from hostile forces but treating it as if it were legitimate. I got the joke & applaud you.
If Trump were active against the draft and the war, it would be understandable – but he just was able(with daddy’s money, of course) to wiggle out(like so many other son’s of rich men). The draft lottery is what ended the draft, because then if the son’s birthday was early in the lottery, he had to go or run. Those rich families weren’t going for that.
One baby boomer who did alternative service was the actor Richard Dreyfuss. He worked in a hospital as a conscientious objector instead of going into the service.
“Get out your safety goggles, soon it will be raining glass from the ceiling!”
.
Glass ceiling
“The United States Federal Glass Ceiling Commission defines the glass ceiling as “the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements.”"
.
This assumes the reason women do not have a particular job is because of others stopping them despite their qualifications.
.
It ignores any legitimate disqualifications even when those deciding are also women. “According to exit polls, 53 percent of voters in the 2012 elections were women, which means that women determined the outcome of the presidential election.” .
“65.7% – The percentage of eligible female voters who voted in the 2008 election. 61.5% – The percentage of eligible male voters who voted in the 2008 election.
.
*70.4 million — The number of women who cast ballots in the 2008 presidential election,
versus 60.7 million men."*.So women decide and then blame men anyway.
@Jack’s World – Clinton first got a 2S draft deferment through his time as a Rhodes Scholar and then was a CIA asset on his tour of Europe and Russia with his control op being one Richard Stearns who ran the busted National Student Association operaton which became an international scandal. The Russia trip covered his draft obligation.
Our first mistake was screwing up: “If you aren’t old enough to vote, you’re too young to fight.” And moving to “If you are old enough to fight, you are old enough to vote.”
Nobody under 25 should be in the military, as their brains are still not mature.
Of course, the military wants them BEFORE they are mature, when they still think they are immortal, and can be trained to believe that killing people is an ethically sound behavior.
The only winner of any war since the 1800’s has been the financiers and weapons manufacturers.
These are the folks who have brought you every major conflict, ringing cries of patriotism and saving the world, whilst squeezing every single penny of profit out of the conflict.
If Trump wants to do some good, then his first act should be to arrest and try every single American wanted for War Crimes or Profiteering. We protect these criminals from international prosecution in the World Court, and we refuse to prosecute them here under USA law.
Frankly, our system has become a government controlled by money, so I see little difference between electing a career politician from the political side of things, or a career business man from the business side of things. They are two parts of the same machine.
While I suspect that things will not get either as bad as the worst scenarios put forth nor as good as the best for a Trump administration, I also suspect that overall, few things will change.
For Trump, just as every other candidate, still believes that the economy is based upon scarcity of resources—a model which has not matched reality for over 45 years.
Until we have government run by people who understand that our basic economic system changed two generations ago, they are bound to continue to attempt solutions based upon an outdated model…and as such, are doomed to fail.
