The local library gave up on over-do charges. It cost more to collect than was collected. The percentage of over-do books decreased once the fees were removed.
It was a good thing when the library did away with overdue fines. Though I still strive to return my books on time, I don’t have to get nervous if I can’t finish a book on time. But it’s considerate of others to make your best effort especially when they won’t renew the book because there are holds on it.
Ours did away with the small fines because it “might be a burden for some to pay”. Well take responsibility and return them on time then!! And some might just keep the books, a “burden” on the taxpayers, not to mention depriving others from reading the book.

My town (hamlet?) doesn’t have an official library but we DO have a historical museum that will lend out books of interest if asked, no charge.
