I once actually saw a clothes dryer swallow a sock. ‘Twas at the laundromat, and one machine didn’t stop when you opened the door, but I figured I could pull the lint trap out (it was in the frame below the open door), sweep the lint out of it, and get it back into the slot and the door closed before anything happened.

I was wrong. One quick suck and I was minus half of a nice pair of light-blue argyles.

Can you imagine if the dryer decided to give up the missing socks all at one time?

I am told that when I was 3 I took off my shoes and threw them out the car window while driving over the Hanover street bridge in Baltimore. I, of course, deny all knowledge. (circa 1951)
