This kind of thing use to happen to me years ago when I use to cam with people in chat rooms. They would type out lol, but wouldn’t show ANY sign they thought it was funny on cam. Made me wonder if they forgot I could see their lack of reaction.
Lake Wobegon on Minnesota Public Radio had a segment called “LOL, Lutherans On Line” . It is hilarious, I heard it years ago and still remember part of it. Don’t know if it is still out there. Check it out.

This is like those people who say “lol”, shorthand for “laughing out loud”, rather than actually laughing.
