I took piano lessons grudgingly when I was a kid. I was just starting grade 1 (in piano) when my brother was already at grade 4. And we started at the same time! So I do have one, two handed piece that I can play. LOL

Once people learn he can only play one song, they will call him the ‘one trick phony’.

It’s stunning to me how many people tell me they took lessons for eight years but can’t play piano. Maybe if they aimed for this standard, they would feel better about their skills.

Could be the instructor. When I was a kid – like, 8 or 10 – my folks decided I should learn to play something, and for reasons that escape me to this day (I’m 78 minus 3 days now) they chose the electric steel guitar (I think they hoped I would become good at playing C&W music.) They found this old guy who was at best a mediocre violin teacher but who claimed to also be able to teach steel guitar. All he ever did for lessons was to have me try to learn by rote how to play a few specific songs, like “O Sole Mio” (that one sticks in my head to this day!) Never any music theory, how to read sheet music, or anything. Took my folks a couple of years to figure out they were throwing their money away on nothing.
