Jim: But, Elly, if you learn by reading alone and you don't have the sheet music, you can't play at all!! Music is a natural thing! instruments came before paper! Elly: I don't care!- I just want her to learn the correct way, first. Jim: There isn't one!!!

I’d say playing by ear is a harder skill to teach. If you can both play by ear and read music, you’ve got a lot of tools in your toolbox
