John: What's wrong with getting the kids a dog, Elly? Elly: They're not responsible enough. John: But, they'd learn! A dog would provide entertainment and exercise... they're loving and smart and... Elly: John, we are not getting a dog for the kids! John: But, what about me?!!

As the mother of 2 boys, I can fully understand why Elly did not want a dog. She knew that once the novelty wore off, the cleaning, feeding, taking care of the dog will fall to her.

I definately understand saying no to the kids, but as a wife, I will never “put my foot down” with my husband!

I knew John was the one who really wanted a dog. Since he does the care should fall to him and Michael.

Divorce? If that would cause an end to a marriage, then that was no marriage to begin with. Couples should celebrate their differences. How boring, and sad if the wife just blindly did what the husband said.

I just love how John is trying to convince Elly that the kids could raise a dog as their tucking Liz in. I don’t think the argument of “they’re not responsible enough” really applies to her. But that would be funny…

“Put his foot down?” Marriage is a partnership, not a dictatorship. I had this same thing happen when my wife wanted a dog recently. We ended up getting one but she had to agree to certain conditions.
