I guess we are continuing the theme of Elly thinking mean things about other people. First she hates on Martha for not wearing enough clothing and flirting with Michael. Now she’s slamming Fiona because she is still angry over her past slights. It’s good thing John has a positive attitude to balance Elly out.

John, why are you borrowing trouble by going to visit someone who took advantage of you, pretended she would help out with a new baby and only upset the whole family (including the dog)? Let well enough alone and just go home…

This strip was set in 1991, so Fiona fits right in. At that time, cocaine cowboys were giving a new meaning to the “Great White North”. Every Canadian with a spare Bob Borden in his billfold was dabbling in drugs.

Fiona has all the obvious signs of a heroin addict. She is helped by John, who is a codependent enabler.
