Mike is thinking that since Martha spent so little on Mike as opposed to him spending on her that she cares less about him than he does her. Well, Mike, could be you have a better allowance? Not all kids get allowances from their parents. Does she have a job after school? If not, this might be why. You’re a dentist’s son so he can afford to give allowances. You’ve met Martha’s family, so consider her situation. I do remember Mike going on a cruiser type boat with her family but the boat could be just a rental.

You should be proud that you’re outspending her!

(Last year) Martha: “I think I spent more on Michael than he did on me. Wait’ll next year.”

It’s the thought behind a gift that makes it meaningful. If someone thinks that you will appreciate the gift, in this case a t-shirt, it makes it special. If instead it is something that has seems to have no thought of the person receiving it, such as a regular mug grabbed at the last minute, that makes it the gift questionable.

Teenagers should have a set amount of how much they spend on each other to prevent situations like this.

It should neither be a competition nor an excersize in seeing how much you can bargain down how you show your feelings about someone.

During this comic’s time period it was customary for the guy to pay for his girl’s dinner and movie tickets. Supposedly to cover the girl’s expenses of having to buy a new dress every time and also the makeup to make her look pretty. Get used to it dude, you’ll always wind up paying more, or else she’ll dump you for greener pastures.

It doesn’t matter how much you spend. It matters how much you care. One does not always reflect the other.

The cost of my gift would depend on what I found that was a perfect present for the receiver. It is different every year. I like giving…hate getting.

Bad thinking Mike. You shouldn’t be indebted to your girlfriend on a gift to gift exchange. Save that for when you are married…..

It took my bride twenty five years to get that “they spent more” mentality on gift exchange. One simple line. When I really heard it, took all of the nonsense out of it. She says, “You are given a gift, not a debt.” I now appreciate that I have been selected to share in a moment with someone who thought to show me this kindness. Thank you all.
