Paige: "A math teacher offers to assign one second of homework the first week of school, two seconds the second week, four seconds the third, and so on. If the amount of homework doubles every week, is this something you would agree to for the duration of the 36-week school year?" I'm a little worried about answering this one wrong. Peter: Is that Mr. Thompson? He's evil.

For the last week of school, she would have 34,359,738,368 seconds of work, or 572,662,306:08 minutes or 9,544,371:46:8 of homework, and if she worked straight through, it would take her over 397,682 days! That’s over 1,089 years!!!

OMG MR. THOMPSON IS EVIL
gocomics over 10 years ago
Er, once the seconds of homework exceeds the seconds in a week, the math teacher can no longer honor his offer, retroactively invalidating the entire agreement.

He can give homework that needs that much time, to actually complete it it would have to be parallelly run.

While JasonFox IsMyHero (btw thanks for figuring out so many of the puzzles found in this comic strip!) solved for how long the last week of homework would take, I couldn’t help but to take it a step further and crunch the numbers (read: make a Matlab script) to figure out how much time she would have spent on homework during the entire 36 weeks.
This would result in her spending 47,070,313 Years, 4 Weeks, 1 Day, 7 Hours, 32 Minutes, and 14 Seconds on homework over the course of the school year. Of course this is including leap years.
Truly Mr. Thompson is the epitome of evil.

at the thirty-sixth week, you would be getting 2,179 years of homework ever day

On the last week of school they’re have to do 9544371 hours of homework HOURS with an H. Given that their are only 168 hours in a week that would be impossible.

Anyone know why Peter is always eating a banana?
Official Foxtrot Page about 2 years ago
Well, it’s probably because he eats so many junky things that when he’s hungry and eats everything, he has to have a banana. It’s also an easy thing to draw in a person’s hands.
Oh, bananas! 11 months ago
That would be 9544371.76889 hours on the last week!
