MRS OLSEN MUG SALE
Frazz: Nice crowd. You've sold 398 "world's greatest teacher" mugs. Mrs Olsen: What? I've never owned more than a couple. Frazz: And 1,841 total. Mrs Olsen: What? This sale started with 962. Frazz: Like I said: nice crowd.

@bigpuma, re oh-so-many hours ago…Lengthening the alliteration, how’s about “fractious, fault-finding fussbudget”?
Randy B Premium Member over 11 years ago
Ah. Now it’s clear why she didn’t know she had so many “World’s Greatest” mugs. They arrived during the sale.

People probably brought mugs they wanted to get rid of and just donated them to a good cause … sort of like a rummage sale.

I think people keep buying the mugs and immediately re-gifting her with them.…or to put it another way…They are gifting her with money! My guess is most of them are either former students or parents of current students.

I suspect the extra mugs came from some of the other teachers, who wanted to get rid of their own stockpiles.
Mopman over 11 years ago
No, there aren’t really extra mugs, just people donating money without really buying the “greatest teacher” mugs. I believe that’s what Frazz means in the last panel.

Like how we remember a ‘Miss Dove’ or a ‘Mr Chipping,’ the people are showing their appreciation for her actions with the girl and how she has been to the community as a whole. The key here is Frazz saying ‘Nice crowd’. We may laugh at her from Cauffield’s point of view but she does care, and Frazz himself is always wonderful as the mediator between the perception and the reality Nice job, Jef.

She might need a bigger Rent-A-Shed after the sale is through.

@bigpeevishpuma et al
I’ve been thinking maybe Mrs. Olsen really does know how many mugs she started out with, and that the parents (and perhaps grown-up former students, like Frazz) have been “buying” nonexistent mugs as a way of giving to Mrs. Olsen. Hence my earlier comment about “buying one for the price of two.” Frazz’s repeated “nice crowd” remark might support that. After all, Mrs. Olsen’s recent heroism may have got people’s attention and got them thinking there’s more to her than they thought. What if all those ethereal mugs were listed as “World’s Greatest Teacher” mugs?!

@bigpuma
I can go with frustrated, flummoxed, and flabbergasted, but I’ll insist on throwing in “frabjous.” (…she chortled, etc….)
