“Almost there” fits into the notion of “a journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step.”

Lots of folks go on vacation to some place with a beach this time of year. Hence the beach wear. Believe me they don’t do it if it don’t sell. Well at least not KEEP doing it. 20+ yrs of Retail Management. Besides some people do go to the pool at the Y/Health Club.

I heard the Philadelphia Eagles are one of the teams in this year’s Super Bowl, and that the atmosphere might get ugly because Philadelphia fans have a reputation for bad behavior, a negative outlook and just plain meanness. And I get the impression football fans in general can be pretty rude.

Every so often I read about a pro football (or baseball or basketball or hockey) player who retires and give marathon or triathlon a go. And I think the culture shock must be startling. None of those sports’ fans want half the racers to lose. They don’t want ANYBODY to lose. They want everybody to finish, and furthermore, they’re inclined to tell every last entrant that they By God WILL finish, and soon. Sometimes unrealistically soon — it’s always fun to guess how many miles from the finish line you’ll hear the first “you’re almost there!” — but you really have to admire the good nature of it all.

I can’t help thinking that if that sort of sport were our national sport, we’d be a much different country. Then I give it a little more thought and and decide, no, if we were a different country, then we’d have a different sort of national sport. Then I give it more thought yet, and I still don’t figure anything out. But there’s a little voice in my head that yells, “You’re almost there!”

I’d be happy to go north for the summer. If I could.

Okay, but this doesn’t explain why you can’t buy swimsuits in July, but you can buy ski jackets…
