In my observation, the run on instant ramen happens after the month’s money runs out. Which seems to be somewhere close to 10 days after they get there.
For my kids, I would ‘fortify’ the ramen by using leftovers like corn, and chicken, then adding half of a hard-boiled egg. They would call it ’Poppa ramen."
When I was a kid, we didn’t have lifeguards at most places we swam. We’d sometimes get some relatively large waves in Lake Michigan, too. Never knew anyone who drowned, but once or twice heard about a case on the news.
Almost every soldier I knew had their own recipes for them. My husband loves fried bologna, eggs and cheese in his. He drains off all of the juice and eats it on a plate. It looks nauseating to me. When I was a teen I liked cheese, but not any more. Just give me beef or soy sauce (what used to be called “Oriental”, I always add soy sauce to any flavor Ramen so I guess I was doubling up it) and I am happy. How they think that is TWO servings I haven’t a clue. Most of the guys used at least 2 packages at a time. Meanwhile I can totally see the sodium being enough for at least 4 servings in a package.
When we were stationed in Germany I was surprise to see a Pizza Hut OFF post. (This was in 1988.) They had spaghetti, but they used ramen style noodles. It was so gross. The pizza wasn’t that great either. The food truck run by some local guys was great. It was the first time I’d ever seen a raw egg as a topping. Yuck! After the pie would come out of the oven they’d crack an egg on top and place it in the box like that. I guess maybe the egg cooked a bit on the way home? They actually had cheese on their pizzas and not just some dusting of it.
Gentle commenters. Go Comics has decided to use stupidbot techniques to prevent posting URLS. For the moment at least, if you capitalize everything up through the TLD (that’s the “dot com” part) the bot seems to be fooled:

I was really, really poor sometimes, but I always “just said ‘no’” to ramen.

In the comic strip, “Baldo,” the kids (elementary and high school) are already back in school! My district in PA starts Tuesday, September 5.

Up here in The Great White North, lifeguards are typically high school kids.

Oh NO! I must run to the store and get some ramen!

It takes a lot of stamina to work through those Ramen and cold pizza carb crashes. And no, beer doesn’t help.

I remembered a “Doodle” from years ago about the man who created ramen.
