For many that’s as much a tradition as reading assignments over the weekends.
[To me, Mrs. Olsen’s ‘whisper’ kinda detracts from her character. Rarely ever see her reacting to a class or to students in general. Although, if she was only referring to Caulfield I could understand it. Sometimes even one’s most outstanding students can be an intermittent pain.]
And judging by recent events, many did their best to forget anything they learned. I can’t count the times I have heard “but I’ll never use that in real life”
I know somebody who teaches in a district with a large population of south Asian immigrants. She told me those parents complain when she doesn’t assign a lot of homework.
I went to grade school back in the 1950s, and I don’t remember EVER being assigned homework. That didn’t happen until we got to junior high. Has this been a subsequent development?

Don’t cheer too much, kids, she’ll more than make up for it when you return to school.

Sometimes many students do not fully appreciate school or their teachers until many years into the future when they are adults.

Based on recent events, it appears we stopped teaching what used to be call “Civics” (or how our government works) long ago.

She just bought herself a weekend of peace, by making her students happy. What an awesome concept.

The little stinkers of today likely feeel they deserved not to have homework over Thanksgiving so, no reason for them to be grateful.
