My meadow needs mowing. But it will have to wait. There’s at least one killdeer nest (they nest on the ground) out there, and there may well be more. They’re very hard to see. As of last night, three of the four eggs had hatched.

(You know killdeer. They’re those birds on the nature show that pretend to have a broken wing to lead intruders away from the nest.)

MeGoNow: I once saw a killdeer doing that act and, of course, looked in the opposite direction. The other adult was convoying three chicks to some shrubbery. Their tiny feet were moving so fast as to be invisible. Crossing an undulating lawn, they looked like miniature hovercraft, keeping the same distance off the ground, regardless of the terrain.

We had a killdeer nest at the power plant near one of the cooling towers. Staked it so the mowers would not run over it.A bigger danger was from the various wildlife wandering around. They hatched tho.

@annette143 One of my all time favorite tunes. Let’s not forget The Jamies, “It’s Summertime, summertime.”
