For all we know, Purrcy was only going to play a bit of footie with the kibble; our cat, Akiro, loves to play hockey with anything that will skitter across the kitchen floor (but he’s not above snacking on a bit of the kibble, too).
We had a similar issue. My cousin and his wife and dog came to visit. The dog was sniffing around, and discovered the cat’s dish and starts to eat the cat’s food. Cat walks over to the dog, arches his back, fluffs his tail, and hisses (didn’t touch the dog), and the dog runs and hides. Dog was afraid of cats from then on out. I had no idea what the cat said, but it was meaningful to the dog.

You’re right – goodwill and friendship only goes so far and then you just have to draw the line. Filching food is it.

Cats don’t eat that much, Fred. You could have let Purrrcy have a nibble

Well, you can’t just let your food sit there and not expect someone else to help you eat it!
