I started to show my students real war footage because they thought of war as a video game. They seemed to be most impressed by WW I footage. Ancient history to them, yet they had film back then?!
I’ve had the opportunity to talk with several vets that experienced Guadalcanal. Almost all of them said what the movies got wrong were – They didn’t swear that much. It wasn’t over in 90 minutes. They hated when non-combatants got in the way. There was no music track. And… the smells. Many of them gave up hunting. Life was just too wonderful to observe.
Dad was a radio operator, then retrained to be a chaplain’s assistant. One of his classmates from high school was injured there, but the ship they put him on back to Japan never made it back.
