Your strip today reminded me of something. Money may not equal happiness, but it sure helps your children get a leg up over other kids. Marie and I have two wonderful, talented children (who are in college). The boy dances classical ballet, and the girl, among other things, loves to ride dressage. Mac took lessons in a strip mall ballet studio, and Alexandria traded mucking out horse stalls for lessons. Because of their humble parentage, neither benefited from private, expensive tutors or camps for their art, but both made the most of what they had, and we couldn’t be prouder. However, both children realized the power of money when they got to their respective colleges. Those who had private lessons, private tutors, and more opportunities had a leg-up on the other students.
Don’t get me wrong. If we had money, then we would have given the kids more, but that wasn’t to be. Still, when people talk about a level playing field, that becomes impossible when the two paths diverge so early in life.
I had very limited art training when I went to college and realized that I was way behind the male classmates who had taken high school life drawing classes. I worked extra hard at my life drawing and I got better. Back then I could get into our program without any life drawing in the portfolio. One Canadian college has a one year training course so that when students like me apply to our portfolio driven program, they have a better chance of competing with students who received excellent art training in high school. This was very fair and some of our best students came from ‘Art Fundamentals’.
The pickleball game is the opening notes of a ‘symphony’ that will continue until August 25! things will not go as expected, and the ..others… appear beginning on Monday!
