Night-gaunt, even if the material from Sunday was in the public domain, Scancarelli presented it as his own – which it definitely was NOT. Attribution is the professional and proper way to handle it. Every writer would want that consideration.
Sorry, I have seen the fraudulent efforts of Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair. This sort of thing doesn’t stop unless light is brought to it.
I had the great good fortune to see Mr. Buono on stage as Falstaff in “Henry IV”. He was brilliant, and I can still hear him in my mind yelling “Embaaalllmmmed!?” (See Shakespeare to see why he yelled that)
I am sort of surprised that Jerimuligan1 lowers his august self down to the level of we plebians when he reads comics. Certainly he doesn’t do it to laugh?
Of course I enjoy comics, AuldWan, or I wouldn’t be passionate about comic writing integrity. What Scancarelli did here was not right and should be held to a standard consistent with the respect this long-running feature has earned. If these things are not pointed out, it would give encouragement for this sort of thing to continue. Readers deserve to know if what is being presented to them as original is truly thus. I don’t have a problem with quoting and excerpting, just use attribution – frankly, I felt his artwork enhanced Mr. Buono’s “Fat Man’s Prayer” very nicely. It was a shame it was passed off as original, an error hopefully not done before and never again…
YellowPeeps, I would hope that you would care. If you had intellectual property stolen like that I am sure you might see things differently. As for Victor Buono, he died some 28 years ago, so he doesn’t require defending. The concept still stands, no matter the origin.
I have a family Bible that belonged to my great-grandmother. The writing is often in pencil with misspellings (my grandmother was born in 1898 and only went to school through 3rd grade), but it is well worth the effort to read.

This is sad not able to read writing. I have seen kids or teens writing that is very creative and easy to read.
