Unfortunately, today apples are almost guaranteed to go straight to the garbage. Too many tales of razor blades and needles in them. I seem to remember hearing of hospitals opening the x-ray lab on Halloween so you could have the goodies checked for tampering. Do we live in a sick society or what?
I hated the people who dropped cookies into the bag (un wrapped of course, this was the 40s ) they always got crushed. And I could get apples at home, Now bags of popcorn or candy corn were always welcome. And the old man down the street gave out nickles. They were good for a Coke or a big Hershey Bar.

I couldn’t imagine anyone would give out pennies these days. Even little old ladies understand inflation!
